Title: Under Cover
Author: opalmatrix
Warnings: Gojyo's mouth, references to m/m
Pairing(s): Hakkai/Gojyo
Spoilers: nothing much
Notes: Written for saiyuki_time challenge #20, Clothing. Time allowed: 50 minutes. Time taken: about 45 to actually write. Thanks to smillaraaq for getting me started: a couple of things I've written recently were already about clothes, so I was kind of stuck this time!
Summary: Under the influence of some beer, Gojyo considers Hakkai's usual uniform.

Goku was babbling at the supper table again. This time it was about grasshoppers or some such - they're hard to see 'cause they're the same color as the grass. Gojyo didn't mind it too much when the monkey got like that because it reminded him of himself as a kid, telling Jien stuff. And then Hakkai got his schoolteacher thing going, explaining how it was called protective coloration, and then he started in on other examples, including predators who camouflaged themselves so that they didn't look dangerous.

And that's when Gojyo looked at Hakkai's neat and tidy Assistant to the Great Priest Sanzo outfit, and laughed.

"Really, Gojyo," said Hakkai, mildly, and went on explaining sand vipers and river pike and other deadly things in disguise.

And that's exactly what was funny, because didn't that just describe Hakkai perfectly? Because there was no one who would look at that uptight get-up, almost like a uniform, and that white sash - I'm a Buddhist layman, after all, Gojyo - and think that Hakkai was at all dangerous. Let alone - and Gojyo was not ashamed to admit this to himself - the most dangerous one of the four of them.

And come to think of it (thought Gojyo, as his third beer hit bottom and he began to feel really mellow), that wasn't the only thing that Hakkai kept under wraps with his clothes. When Banri had come slithering back that time, he'd mocked Gojyo about Hakkai: thought you couldn't stand buttoned-down types. Hah! Little did Banri know (or Gojyo, either, back then) what a total freak Hakkai could be in bed (or out of it - Hakkai liked to find interesting places to do it). That fact made Hakkai's normal look - all covered up, halfway up his neck, down to the wrists and the soles of his feet, and even part of his face with that monocle - something else entirely to Gojyo. When all those layers started coming off, and all that pale, smooth skin (and that amazing gnarly scar) started to show, it was so fucking special. It always turned him on - like switch. Even one bare shoulder was enough, sometimes.

Of course that's what Gojyo had on his mind when he followed Hakkai up the stairs to their room later - watching his buddy's butt only barely hinted at beneath his trim, tidy trousers. Maybe even the back of the guy's neck is enough! And then the light gleamed on the last part of Hakkai's disguise, the part Gojyo hadn't been thinking about: the three little stripes of metal on his lover's ear. Because Hakkai was the only person Gojyo had known who could get a little too naked.

But maybe, deep down, Gojyo really liked that, too.

This is great! I love Gojyo's voice here, and I love the idea of Hakkai's "protective coloration." Because it's so true! Very clever and insightful. Thanks so much for sharing!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm so glad smilla got me started on it - once she asked why Hakkai is so buttoned down and covered up, it all just started flowing.

Very nicely done. I like the idea of the layers of the clothes as protective - even the monacle (people used to accuse me of hiding behind my glasses), and ultimately of course the limiters. Good job of portraying Gojyo's POV; it has the right "feel" for the kappa.

Thanks! Yes, Hakkai has such a hard time with what he's become - attracting attention is the last thing he wants to do (although with this group, it can't be avoided!).

Glasses make an interesting mask - I wear them myself.

Oooh, thanks! I'm glad you liked it - couldn't have done it without smilla's second-level prompt.

This was really full of interesting ideas, like Hakkai being too naked, and the way he covers up almost obsessively.

The "too naked" was something that just sort of emerged as I wrote it - I think something else I'm writing about him also has its influence. I was also struck by the point that clytemnaestra made in the (in)sanity challenge, that there's really no difference in his destructiveness in his human vs. youkai form. So his human form is another layer of protective coloration ... but Gojyo, sensation-seeking thing that he is, is fascinated by what's underneath.

and that amazing gnarly scar

Haha! Very Gojyo thing to say, that. The whole observation was spot-on, but the line that really fixed it for me was Because Hakkai was the only person Gojyo had known who could get a little too naked.

But maybe, deep down, Gojyo really liked that, too.

Rawr. ^___^

I'm thinking Gojyo has all kinds of mixed feelings about that scar - I mean, it's sort of his too, in a way - he was there when in came into being.

I think Gojyo could easily accept Hakkai in his other form, but Hakkai isn't ready to take that chance yet.

(And yes, some amazingly hot scenes have been written with too-naked Hakkai!)

I agree; Gojyo would be entirely comfortable with youkai!Hakkai, it's youkai!Hakkai who's uncomfortable with it!!

Whoo hoo! This was very insightful, and very Gojyo as well. I liked it a lot, especially the last 2 lines.
Aug. 9th, 2008 03:04 am (UTC)

Yay, thanks! It's funny how some of the best lines just sort of happen - that certainly wasn't there when I was first thinking this through.

oh gosh! this put a smile on my face. you did gojyo's voice wonderfully well. you know someone is hot about their boyfriend when they think:

Maybe even the back of the guy's neck is enough!

a lovely read - thank you for writing and sharing.

I think Gojyo's getting conditioned - very happily so - to be turned on by any portion of Hakkai, really! I'm glad you enjoyed it - thanks for reading.

Wow, you totally nailed both Gojyo and Hakkai in this. Very well done!
Aug. 9th, 2008 03:07 am (UTC)

Awww, thanks! I love my 585 ... .

Thoughtful, insightful, well written and entertaining. I loved it very, very much.

I'm so glad this worked for you! I was lucky smilla was able to get me started on the right track - I'd already written two stories recently about clothes ("The Bottom line" and "Cast-Offs"), so I was totally stuck.

Oh, yum. I'm so glad you're still not developing an immunity to the contagious bunnies! :) Absolutely lovely -- I'm feeling about as pleasantly warm-and-buzzed as the kappa just reading along.
Aug. 9th, 2008 03:14 am (UTC)

smilla, I remain terrifyingly susceptible to your plot bunnies! (That thing I'm writing for you? Currently 3,800 words or so, and I'm not more than about a third of the way through, at most ... .)

I'm really pleased it worked for you! It was fun to write.

This is really wonderful. The idea of protective coloration in Hakkai's dress and manner (Oh-don't-mind-me-ahahah....) was really perceptive, and I like all the various aspects of it that were woven into the piece. With Gojyo as the observer, it feels like hide-and-seek. Very nicely done.
Aug. 29th, 2008 11:54 am (UTC)

Eeek! This came in while I was away, and I didn't get back to it ... yes, in some variants, I imagine Hide-and-Seek is a great favorite of Gojyo's, LOL! Until he met Hakkai, Gojyo's world didn't include a lot of subtlety ... he's learning to appreciate the finer things in life.

And if no one knows what Hakkai really is, then Hakkai doesn't need to rememberit himself quite as often ... I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

very nice.I liked that Goku's babble reminded GOjyo of him and his big brother

"Under Cover"

Ooops ... I was away when this came in, and just came back to it! Sorry!

So much of Gojyo and Goku's relationship seems to echo Gojyo's with Jien when Gojyo was a child. I'm glad you enjoyed this!
